Air Tools FAQ's
What size air compressor do I need to power air tools?
The size of air compressor you need depends on the type and size of air tools you are using. Important factors you need to consider are how much air consumption (cfm/i/min flow) is needed to power your tool of choice versus how much air flow (cfm/L/Min flow) your compressor can produce. Additionally, you will need to check the air consumption that the air compressor can handle.
Another measurement to look out for is the maximum 'FAD' (Free Air Delivered) for the compressor this is the Maximum air flow rate at output pressure the compressor can offer.
Most small
hobby-grade air compressors typically allow you to adjust the output pressure up to a maximum of 8 bar (120 psi).
For tasks like
tyre inflation, larger 3HP direct drive or belt drive compressors can generate air pressure up to 10 bar (160 psi).
However, it's advisable to regulate the pressure down to around 6 bar (90 psi) for most
air tools. Increasing the pressure won't enhance the tool's performance; in fact, it can shorten its lifespan. Moreover, boosting the pressure won't increase the airflow necessary for optimal tool efficiency.
What kind of oil do I need for air powered tools?
You will need
air tool oil to power most air tools. This is a specially formulated type of oil to be used in almost all air tools needing lubrication. A few drops regularly is all that is needed. Do Not use any other type of 'Light' oil.
What size air hose do I need for air tools?
Again, this will depend on the type / size and power of the air tool you are using. However, most air tools will run efficiently from a
8mm (5/16") air hose.
Smaller tools such as nail guns may only need a
7mm (1/4") air hose, whilst powerful impact wrenches will need an
10mm (3/8") air hose. The tools Instruction sheet should tell you what the hose bore requirement is, but never be afraid to ask us if in any doubt at all, even if you didn't purchase it from us.
