What is a Belt Drive Air Compressor?

Unlike direct drive compressors, belt-drive models utilise a flexible belt to connect the air pump and the motor. As the motor kicks in, it sets the belt spinning, transferring that motion to the compressor’s pump. Crucially, the sizes of the pulleys this belt travels through dictate the ultimate pressure and speed the air compressor can achieve.

What is better a Belt Driven Air Compressor or a Direct Drive Air Compressor?

Neither type of compressor is better than the other, it really does depend on what you need your compressor for. Direct drive compressors are cheaper and therefore fantastic for smaller jobs such as nailing, blowing, cleaning and using lighter air tools. Although belt drive compressors are more expensive, it’s often because they are more powerful. You would usually find belt driven air compressors in garages and for jobs such as car spraying that require a constant stream of power. This is because belt drive compressors are far less likely to run out of air when being used continuously.

What Happens if the Belt on the Air Compressor Breaks?

While it’s annoying if your air compressor belt breaks or gets too worn, it’s a fairly simple process to replace it. You can buy replacement belts (just ensure you are getting the right one for your compressor – check the user manual).

To change the belt:

  1. Make sure your compressor is switched OFF.
  2. Remove the cage / casing which houses your belt.
  3. Remove the belt (the assistance of a tool such as a screwdriver can help to lift it out).
  4. Add the new belt by placing it in the groove of both the big and small wheel.
  5. Ensure that the belt tension is no more than 1cm (press down on the belt once you have threaded them over the two wheels – if you press down on the belt, it shouldn’t push further than about 1 cm).
  6. Reapply the case that houses the belt ensuring that the screws are tight enough.
