As a general overview, if you are looking for a compressor to use at home then you are probably best with a direct drive compressor. These are generally cheaper but less powerful than belt compressors and so are better for small DIY tasks and odd jobs such as tyre inflation and cleaning.

Having said that, if you are a very keen hobbyist and need an air compressor for air sanders, ratchets and air spraying vehicles etc, then you are better off with a portable belt driven compressor.

Static air compressors are used more for garages and workshops that need a constant stream of air.

Although both models are static, the vertical compressors are designed to take up less room in your workshop if space is an issue. Additionally, the vertical compressors range between 16-20 amps, meaning they are not as powerful as the 3 phase static compressor models.
